Visited Dr L, my GP. The pathology report from the biopsy of the second thyroid nodule says:
“Rare groups of enlarged thyroid follicle cells with ovoid nuclei, pale chromatin, some with nuclear grooves, are present in discohesive sheets in a bloodstained background with cystic change and evidence of haemorrhage (siderophages and cholesterol crystals). Colloid is not a feature.
The cytological findings are of atypia of undetermined significance. Some of the nuclear features are reminiscent of those seen in papillary thyroid carcinomas, however, diagnostic features are not seen. The possibility of a papillary lesion with extensive cystic change and haemorrhage, cannot be excluded. The differential diagnosis is atypia in cyst lining cells. Suggest repeat FNB for further assessment of the lesion.
Diagnosis: Atypia of undetermined significance.”
Also, TSH, T4, T3 and thyroid antibodies were all within normal range. Dr L had also tested for markers of other cancers, in the liver, kidneys, intestines, etc. with nothing abnormal.
Now he wants me to wait, he didn’t say how long, for my thyroid to recover from this biopsy before I have it repeated.
One of my seven thyroid nodules one tested benign, another tested atypical. My thyroid blood tests were all normal, again. I’ve been very sick for thirty years and getting worse. Are my thyroid nodules causing my health problems? Are they excreting some hormone or some damaged form of some hormone which can’t be measured?
