Sub-specialisation

This page is reserved for a discussion on the sub-sub-specialisation of the medical business.

I think that there are two drivers:

  1. Once qualified, doctors select one disease or treatment, and then spend the rest of their career selling “consultations” in that disease or treatment. They can then make lots of money doing the same, easy, “consultation” over and over, without doing any real work, without having to think too hard. They take the easy route to a well-funded retirement.
  2. Doing just one thing also protects the doctor from legal action. If they only do one thing over and over, then they can’t be blamed for getting anything else wrong. The General Physician who sells ECGs can’t be blamed for missing liver disease.

This page is a work in progress.
