I went to see Dr M, the GP recommeded by Dr L. He didn’t offer me any chinese medicines.

After listening to all of the symptoms and history and asking a few questions, he tells me that the problem is that the lining of my intestines is not 100% and is allowing absorbtion from my intestines to my bloodstream of foreign substances. He tells me that gastroenterologists are only interested in the structure of the GI system and not in the function, something that I could have told him from my long experience. He doesn’t know of anyone in Sydney who is working in that area.

He told me and my wife that we would have to search out someone, possibly a researcher rather than a physician, who is interested in intestinal permeability. We may have to go to the United States or Germany to find someone. I also noted that he said that we would have to do that searching, he didn’t offer to do it himself, nor did he say that Dr L would do that for me. It has been my experience over many years that doctors just sell brief “consultations”; not one has ever taken on the responsibility of finding the cause of my health problems; not one has ever taken on the responsibility of project managing the investigation.

Over the last eightteen years, a couple of naturopaths and at least one doctor have raised the possibilty of intestinal permeability but not one them have offered any possible cause or treatment.

Does anyone know of any physician, pathologist or researcher, preferably in the Sydney area, who is interested in and working in the area of intestinal permeability?

I’ve just been to see my GP, Dr L, again to ask him yet again to find me someone who will take the time and trouble to find the cause of my health problems. I explained again that I don’t need another consultation from some big-name consultant or professor. He’s given me a referral to a GP friend of his who also does Chinese Medicine.

Over the last eighteen years, I’ve seen plenty of alternate health practitioners. They don’t have the technical knowledge or access to technology to determine the underlying cause of my health problems. They all just prescribe their particular treatments to whoever walks through the door.

I’ll go and see this Dr M but I’m not expecting too much. I really need to find a physician or pathologist, preferably in Sydney, who’s not stuck in the current medical business paradigm.

In the medical profession, a Consultant is a senior, experienced doctor who is available to give advice to less experienced doctors. However, from my forty years experience in dealing with the medical profession, it seems that all doctors have fallen into this “consult” mindset and they all adopt this approach even when dealing with patients. I have never met a doctor who will take overall responsiblity for finding the underlying cause of a patient’s health problem.

I’ve just been to see my GP, Dr L, about the intermittent pain that I’ve been getting in my right knee for the last ten or fifteen years. The last xray in 2002 showed what might be a small loose object in the joint. At that time, the followup MRI showed nothing abnormal. He’s sent me off for a new xray.

I also asked him yet again to find me a doctor who could determine the cause of my long-term health problems. So far, everyone I’ve seen just sells their particular “consultation” but I’ve not yet met any doctor with any real problem-solving skills or any desire to use them. He doesn’t hold out much hope of me ever finding the right doctor.

Result of the third biopsy of my thyroid:

“The smears consist of admixed blood and histiocytes with scattered small aggregates of morphologically unremarkable follicular epithelial cells as well as a small amount of thick colloid. The overall appearances are in keeping with the presence of degenerative changes. Although the material is paucicellular there are no definite atypical features.
Diagnosis: Degerative changes; favour benign follicular pattern (Bethesda Category 2)”

So, three biopsies of the same thyroid, three different results. How can you trust them?

It’s now been over two weeks since the thyroid biopsy that was reported as “atypica of undetermined significance … suggest repeat FNB”. My GP, Dr L, said that he would followup with the radiologist who took the biopsy and the pathologist about doing the repeat biopsy. I still haven’t heard from any of them and Dr L has not returned any of my phone calls. So I’ve just made an appointment with Dr L for Monday and I’ll bet that he’s done nothing in the last two weeks.
